• การรับและส่งในเวลาเดียวกัน หรือ Full Duplex เป็นการทำหน้าที่รับและส่งข้อมูลข่าวสารพร้อมกันได้ กล่าวคือสามารถทำการรับในขณะที่ส่งข้อมูลได้ สำหรับรูปแบบของการสื่อสารแบบ Full Duplex ได้แก่ การสนทนาในโทรศัพท์ และการประชุมทางไกล เป็นต้น
• การรับและส่งต่างเวลากัน หรือ Half Duplex หรือ Semi Duplex เป็นการทำหน้าที่รับและส่งข้อมูลข่าวสารแบบสลับเวลากัน กล่าวคือ ในขณะฝ่ายหนึ่งกำลังทำหน้าที่ส่ง อีกฝ่ายต้องเป็นผู้รับ ไม่สามารถส่งในขณะรับได้ เมื่อฝ่ายหนึ่งทำหน้าส่ง อีกฝ่ายหนึ่งต้องทำหน้าที่เป็นผู้รับเท่านั้น เมื่อฝ่ายส่งทำหน้าที่แล้วจึงทำหน้าที่เป็นฝ่ายรับในลำดับต่อไป รูปแบบการสื่อสารแบบ Half Duplex ได้แก่การใช้วิทยุสื่อสาร (Walkie Talkie) การรับส่งโทรสาร อีเมล์ และการใช้ห้องสนทนาในระบบอินเตอร์เน็ตเป็นต้น
