เงินเฟ้อ (Inflation) คือ ภาวะที่ราคาสินค้าและบริการโดยทั่วไปเพิ่มสูงขึ้นต่อเนื่อง ซึ่งหากเงินเฟ้อเพิ่มขึ้นมากจะกระทบต่อฐานะและความเป็นอยู่ของประชาชน
สาเหตุที่ทำให้เกิดภาวะเงินเฟ้อ
1. ประชาชนต้องการซื้อสินค้าและบริการเพิ่มขึ้น
2. ต้นทุนการผลิตที่เพิ่มขึ้น
เงินฝืด (Deflation) หมายถึงภาวะที่ราคาสินค้าและบริการลดต่ำลงเรื่อยๆ เนื่องจากปริมาณสินค้าและบริการต่างๆ ที่ผลิตออกมามีมากกว่าความต้องการซื้อสินค้าของคนในประเทศ และอาจมีปัจจัยที่เข้ามากระทบ เช่น ภัยธรรมชาติ หรือเศรษฐกิจที่มีแนวโน้มหดตัวต่อเนื่อง
