Korea’s labor market is aging at an increasingly rapid pace. New data shows the number of newly employed men in their 60s exceeded the number of those in their 20s for the first time last year. The same goes for women too.
Yoo Lian explains.
Korea is witnessing a shift in employment to the older generation. 2012 was the first year that the number of men in their 60s entering the job market overtook those in their 20s since the nation started keeping track of labor statistics back in 1963.
The number of newly employed men in their 60s rose by over six percent while those in their 20s dropped by pointsix percent last year according to Statistics Korea. There was a similar phenomenon among women workers as well. Women in their 50s took about 50thousand more new jobs than women in their 30s in the same year.
Analysts say such changes in the employment market can be explained by the shifting demographics in Korea resulting from a chronically low birth rate and a rapidly aging population.
Compared to ten years ago, the proportion of economically active Koreans in their 20s has dropped by over three percent, while those in their 60s jumped by over four percent. And in a span of fifty years, people in their 20s went from taking up the greatest proportion of the labor market to the smallest. Analysts say this could also be explained by the sluggish economy which has led an increasing number of young job seekers to spend their time building up their resumes with internships instead of entering the job market after college.
