01×04 – Deductive Validity And Deductive Soundness

Welcome to Fast Philosophy. This video is part of our Introduction To Logic series and explains what deductive validity and deductive soundness are.
Firstly, let’s recap what we’ve said an argument is. An argument is comprised of a set of premises and a conclusion. Both the premises and conclusion are propositions that is, the meaning of a sentence which declares something. It is important to note that arguments cannot have the quality of truth or falsehood only the argument’s premises and conclusion can be true or false.
There are two kinds of logical argument which tell us about how the conclusion is derived from the premises: an argument is either deductive or inductive. You may also have heard of abductive arguments, but abduction is really just a kind of induction, which we’ll talk about later in different video.
An argument is deductively valid when, given the premises, the conclusion cannot not be otherwise. An argument being deductively valid does not necessarily mean that its premises or conclusion are true. For example, this argument is deductively valid because its conclusion is a logical consequence of its premises, despite all of the propositions being false:
P1 Socrates is a woman
P2 All women are made of jam
C Socrates is made of jam
So, deductive validity only tells us that the conclusion is a logical consequence of its premises. Deductive soundness is where the argument is deductively valid and the conclusion is true. And because a deductively sound argument is valid and the conclusion is true, this means that all the premises are true also. Our earlier example about Socrates and jam is therefore only deductively valid but not deductively sound. An example of a deductively sound argument would be:
P1 Alex is a bachelor
P2 Bachelors are unmarried men
C Alex is an unmarried man
