ชนิดของคำในภาษาอังกฤษมี 8 ชนิดด้วยกัน คือ
1. Nouns (คำนาม)
เช่น God, man, John, American, friend, star, stone, air, mile, beauty ใช้เรียกคน สัตว์ สิ่งของ แนวคิด นามธรรม และความเชื่อ

2. Pronouns (คำสรรพนาม)
เช่น I, you, he, she, my, your, his, that, who, what, which, one, some ใช้เรียกแทนคำนาม จะได้ไม่ต้องเอ่ยนามนั้นซ้ำอีก

3. Adjectives (คำคุณศัพท์)
ใช้ขยาย noun กับ pronoun เพื่อบรรยายให้เห็นลักษณะของ noun กับ pronoun ชัดเจนยิ่งขึ้น แบ่งออกเป็น adjective สำหรับบอกลักษณะ บอกปริมาณ และบอกจำนวน
– Qualifier Adjectives หรือคำคุณศัพท์ที่ใช้บอกลักษณะ เช่น beautiful, healthy, kind, poor, fast, dry, black

4. Verbs (คำกริยา)
เช่น go, take, fight, speak, sleep, wait ใช้แสดงกริยาอาการต่างๆ เป็นส่วนสำคัญในภาคแสดงของประโยค นอกจากนี้ คำกริยายังแบ่งได้เป็น กริยาแท้ และกริยาไม่แท้
– Finite Verbs กริยาแท้หรือคำกริยาที่สามารถผันตามประธานและรูปกาลได้
– Non-finite Verbs (Verbals) กริยาไม่แท้ ไม่สามารถเปลี่ยนรูปได้

ตัวอย่าง: verb “be” มีกริยาในรูปต่างๆ ดังนี้

  Finite Form
  Am, is, are, was, were

  Non-finite Form
  Infinitive = to be
Present Participle = being
Past Participle = been
Gerund = being

5. Adverbs (คำวิเศษณ์)
เช่น well, fast, long, gently, recently, again, yesterday, soon, rather, perhaps, not
ใช้ขยาย verb, adverb, adjective, preposition, conjunction, phrase, sentence เพื่อเพิ่มความหมายให้กับสิ่งที่ถูกขยาย

ตัวอย่าง:

เช่น at, in, into, of, for ใช้เชื่อมกริยากับส่วนต่างๆ ของประโยค เพื่อบอกเวลา สถานที่ และทิศทาง ทำให้ประโยคสมบูรณ์

เช่น and, but, or, nor, that, if, because ใช้เชื่อมคำหรือประโยค มีทั้ง conjunction แบบคล้อยตาม ขัดแย้ง และเป็นเหตุเป็นผล

8. Interjections (คำอุทาน)
เช่น oh, alas, hurrah ใช้แสดงความรู้สึกหรืออารมณ์ต่างๆ

ตัวอย่าง:

  Well
  Well! That’s expensive.

  Oh
  Oh! That’s great.

ในภาษาอังกฤษคำหนึ่งคำอาจจะเป็นได้มากกว่าหนึ่งชนิด แต่เมื่อใช้ในบริบทหนึ่งๆ แล้ว คำๆ นั้นจะทำหน้าที่ได้แค่เพียงอย่างเดียว เช่น อาจจะเป็น verb หรือ noun หรือ อาจเป็น adverb หรือ preposition ก็ได้ ตัวอย่างเช่น

  Look:

Look

 at that. (Look = verb)
Let me have a

 at that. (look = noun)

  Walk:
He

 all the way here. (walked = verb)
He is taking a
