Singapore went into deflation for the first time in 11 years in 2020. Core consumer prices fell to 0.3% in December, mostly from falling costs of services and food. Headline inflation, which includes accommodation and transport, stayed flat at 0%. Most items were also up on a monthonmonth basis, which experts said is a sign of a recovering economy. Rising consumer confidence means prices declined less for clothing, footwear and personal care products.

Singapore’s core, headline inflation weaken in July

Singapore’s core and headline inflation have dropped in July. The core inflation of 0.8% which fell from 1.2% in June is the lowest since April 2016. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) said this was due to falling prices in retail, a larger drop in utility costs, and lower service inflation. Meanwhile, July’s headline inflation eased to 0.4%, a slight dip from June’s 0.6%. The central bank said this was due to lower core inflation and a smaller dip in accommodation costs.

Headline inflation is a measure of the total inflation within an economy, including commodities such as food and energy prices (e.g., oil and gas), which tend to be much more volatile and prone to inflationary spikes. On the other hand, \”core inflation\” (also nonfoodmanufacturing or underlying inflation) is calculated from a price index minus the volatile food and energy components. Headline inflation may not present an accurate picture of an economy’s inflationary trend since sectorspecific inflationary spikes are unlikely to persist.
The European Central Bank and the Bank of England have mandates that spell out their inflation goals in terms of headline inflation. India also focuses on headline inflation.
In the United States, however, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) focuses on core inflation—namely the \”personal consumption expenditures price index\”. However, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis James B. Bullard explained that the FOMC still takes headline PCE into account, and that since 2008 (in the wake of the financial crisis) the FOMC has included forecasts for both types of inflation in its semiannual \”Monetary Policy Report\” for the United States Congress. He emphasized that \”the Fed’s main concern is longrun headline inflation and the prices people actually pay.\”
