I see you have gaps between the windows. How do I add them to my i3 config? Do I have to leave i3 and do a clean install of i3 gaps?

6:38 I moved it to the correct spots :). That made me chuckle.

6:53 Why does Vim use hjkl though? Isn’t the “natural” position starts with j? I’m used to put my index finger on j and I guess I’ll have some trouble with Vim.

I love the Manjaro Gnome3 tiling manager. It's amazing to be honest. 🖤🖤

I had that same issue with workspaces and multiple monitors, I tried writing a script to fix it which kind of worked but then if you're focused on the wrong monitor and you switch it messes everything up. It became a major annoyance.

The topics of your videos are really nice however you should try to be a bit more concise when speaking, there is like 50% of the length of your video that could be cut out because nothing of value is said.

Maybe someone can help me out with this one.

For one reason or another: ardour does not show up when I log in using i3.

If I log in with lubuntu, ardour is right there in the desktop but if I log in with i3 and mod+d: It's not there.

I’d like you to do a video on E20 Enlightenment. I know it’s not a real window manager and it’s more of a DE, but I personally found using it to be a pleasant experience. Just make sure to change the default theme IMMEDIATELY (that eye-candy metallic them isn’t for everyone).

Great content for those looking to dive into i3. For the record, the i3 bar does have support for fonts and colors via the i3status utility. It’s actually the output from this utility being displayed on the i3bar.

Been using i3 solidly for a year or two.
Doing complex layouts and keeping them is a pain – i3 really doesn't do this at all well, even using i3-layout-manager.
But, mostly I use full screen or 2 windows on a screen side-by-side, not much more, so no real need.

i've never understood the hjkl thing, it always bothers the hell out of me to move my fingers from the normal position and after doing what i did with hjkl i forget and type with all fingers shifted left by 1 lol.

kind of ironic to see every person I've seen made a video on how tiling wm are great, look at their keyboard because of those horrible shortcuts by dozen. Is it me, or is it not that much of a productivity gain than people say it is ? I feel like I can do the same (tiling to a reasonable level, ie. less than 4 windows) thing on any other good DEs. And without having to look down at my keyboard every time I want to do something.

I just installed i3 on my system so I can play with it. They made a lot of changes to the config file. Keybindings are now in a separate file called config.keycodes. One thing they haven't changed… h j k l. It's still j k l ; … 🙂

hjkl never made sense to me because I have to move my hand one position to the left. And because I don't use qwerty or something similar hjkl doesn't work for me at all. I have cursor keys on a layer wich makes more sense to me

stillFLiP 07/09/2021 - 22:24

I don't really know the reason for HJKL, but honestly, I tried IJKL and it's awful. I makes sense, but imo the most frequent direction to move in Vim, Ranger/Vifm, Lynx is to move up and down, and having JK under index and middle finger is much more comfortable after a few hours, compared to JKL: or IJKL.

Please consider using i3blocks as a replacement for i3status. It lets you continue using i3bar, but with better configuration for the status section. You can configure your own interval and color for each block, and setup custom commands for them. I'm also giving i3 a solid try this year, and I found i3status to be very lacking in configuration.

Edit: Just realizing I'm a year late with the i3 tip.

To send all of your windows on the current workspace to a different workspace, you just have to focus the parent first.

Is installing gaps on i3 as simple as installing i3? Is it just a simple sudo apt-get install command?

Reply
Bill Chatfield 07/09/2021 - 22:24

So after you install i3 you have to swap out all the programs and configuration and write shell scripts to implement basic functionality. The devs are too stupid to use vim keybindings. I agree with everything you had to change. So, not sure what's so great about i3.
