Recalling ties between their families for generations, England’s Queen Elizabeth II praised the king of Thailand on Monday for steering his country into the modern age while preserving its ancient culture.\r
\r
Speaking at a banquet hosted by Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the queen described Queen Victoria her greatgreatgrandmother and Thailand’s King Rama IV as \”royal friends by correspondence.\”\r
\r
The queen and her husband, Prince Philip, arrived Monday for a fiveday stay aimed at strengthening political, commercial and cultural links between the two kingdoms.\r
\r
Britain’s Queen Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip arrived in Bangkok on Monday for their second state visit to Thailand in two decades. \r
\r
The fiveday stay is intended to strengthen political, commercial and cultural links\r
between the two kingdoms.\r
\r
At a celebratory banquet against a spectacular backdrop of old Siamese splendour, Queen Elizabeth was the guest of Thailand’s king Bhumibol at the Grand Palace.\r
\r
Wearing a long white lace dress and diamond and emerald tiara with other matching jewels, the visiting Queen said economic advances in Britain and Thailand brought their own pressures.\r
\r
SOUNDBITE:\r
\”I must extend my sympathy on this year’s floods, while expressing my admiration for the determination shown in building future protection for the community. Change always bring challenges. In your country, as in mine, economic advances have brought individual economic and social pressures, including the increasingly critical problem of managing economic development while preserving our environment. Your majesty, no one could be in any doubt of your personal commitment to seeking solutions to these problems.\”\r
SUPER CAPTION: Queen Elizabeth II\r
\r
She also took the opportunity to stress the importance of human rights and justice for all.\r
\r
SOUNDBITE:\r
\”Although some old conflicts have ended, new ones have unfortunately emerged, requiring urgent international action to try to bring them to an end. We must remain vigilant to ensure that the rights of individuals, adults and children, are protected in society and that justice for all prevails. The threats of drugs, terrorism and also organised crime have also become more immediate.\”\r
SUPER CAPTION: Queen Elizabeth II\r
\r
In accordance with Southeast Asian tradition, King Bhumibol is widely regarded as semidivine. \r
\r
In contrast to British royalty’s roughandtumble relationship to the press, criticism of the king is kept in check by press laws that threaten long prison terms for remarks that diminish \”royal dignity.\”\r
